Batesville is one of the oldest cities in the state, founded in 1821 and named after James Woodson Bates. Bates was the first territorial delegate from Arkansas to the U.S. Congress.

In the early days, the river was largely responsible for accelerating the city’s growth. The cities position on the river made it an important hub for trade and transportation in this region.
