FISHING ON WHITE RIVER
Bass
Bass are so much fun to catch on White River. They are plentiful and always put up a good fight. This makes for amazing fishing stories!
Bass can be caught fairly easily with a variety of different baits and techniques.
Bait to try: Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits, Soft Plastics and Topwater Lures
Catfish
White River has nice population of catfish, both channel and flathead. While many other varieties of fish are best caught in the cooler weather, catfish can be caught even in the hottest summer days and nights. This makes them a popular target for Arkansas anglers during the warmer months.
Once a catfish is hooked, it will put up quite a fight, making them a blast to reel in. It’s not uncommon to catch a 5 – 10 pound catfish on White River.
Pro tip: fish along the banks, mouths of creeks, and around fallen trees/debris, as this is where catfish tend to feed
Bait to try:
(channel cat) Chicken Liver Power Bait, Jewels Catfish Bait
(flathead) live bait, goldfish, green perch
Walleye
This area of White River is great for reeling in giant walleye, especially above Lock 2. Because White River runs cool, walleye are frequently caught in summer months,
Cooler fall temperatures bring walleye back into shallower waters, and fishing can be excellent during this period. While challenging due to cold weather, walleye can still be caught in winter, particularly in deeper pools around structures and formations.
Pro tip: fish early in the morning or late in the evening when temperatures are cooler for best results.
Bait to Try: spinner rig + small shrimp on treble hook for scent
Trout
The White River is famous for its populations of brown trout, rainbow trout and brook trout. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission regularly stocks the river with trout, ensuring they remain plentiful.
Fly fishing is particularly popular, with many anglers using dry flies and streamers. The river’s varied currents and numerous riffles make it an excellent fly fishing destination.
Spinning rods with artificial lures or live bait, such as worms and minnows, are also widely used.
Fly Fishing is most rewarding in early mornings and late afternoons.
Spring through Fall are the best times for trout fishing due to their increased activity and spawning.
Bait to Try: fish eggs and Berkley PowerBait in Garlic Flavor
Favorite colors: yellow/black red/yellow
